Church of South India launches 80th anniversary celebrations with renewed call for unity, hope, and justice

The Church of South India (CSI) marked the beginning of its 80th anniversary celebrations with an inaugural worship service centred on the theme, “Journey of Faith: Affirming Hope and Justice,” inviting congregations to reflect on eight decades of Christian witness and renew their commitment to unity, justice, and mission.

The service opened with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp, accompanied by the Synod Choir singing “Worship the Lord, praise the Creator, the Spirit, the Son.” Directors of various CSI Synod departments and regional coordinators led the worship.

Delivering the keynote address, CSI Moderator Most Rev. Dr K. Reuben Mark expressed gratitude for God’s faithfulness throughout the church’s journey and for the continuing dedication of its congregations, leaders, and ecumenical partners.

Drawing on Jesus’ prayer for unity in John 17:17–21, Mark called the church to remain steadfast in truth and united in mission.

He also encouraged CSI to honour its rich heritage while looking towards the future with renewed hope and a deeper commitment to justice, reconciliation, and Christian witness.

CSI Deputy Moderator Rt Rev. V. S. Francis led the congregation in prayer, emphasising the importance of nurturing a prayerful life. He also called for theological education to remain responsive to changing realities, with learning translated into meaningful Christian practice.

In his welcome address, CSI General Secretary C. Fernandas Rathina Raja outlined three areas for reflection as the church marks this significant milestone.

He highlighted CSI’s longstanding contribution to education, healthcare, and social welfare, particularly its ministry among children, older people, visually impaired people, and vulnerable communities.

Raja also drew attention to the advancement of women’s ordination and leadership within a patriarchal society, affirming the importance of women’s participation in the church’s continuing mission.

Turning to emerging challenges, he invited reflection on the place of artificial intelligence in Christian life, encouraging the church to engage technological developments responsibly while deepening its prophetic and spiritual witness.

At the close of the service, congregants received wristbands bearing the anniversary theme, symbolising a shared journey of faith and a reminder of God’s faithfulness through the generations.
