CWM PARIS AGREEMENT STATEMENT

by CWM

The Directors and Trustees of the Council for World Mission (CWM), meeting in Singapore on 2 June 2017, express profound sadness and regret at the President of the United States of America’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

CWM is a partnership of 32 Church Denominations from around the world, representing more than 50 thousand communities and over 21 million Christians.  Included in its membership are people from some of the nations and communities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.  CWM has campaigned for Climate Justice for many years, seeing this as a part of its sacred responsibility to care for all creation.

We see the withdrawal of the United States of America from the Paris Agreement as a decision that prioritises the interests and profits of the fossil fuel industry and transnational corporations.  It is a self-serving decision that does not take into consideration the survival of this planet and its inhabitants.

We applaud global leaders who have expressed strong support for the Agreement which shows the spirit of leadership that the world needs today.  We encourage the rest of the world to not give up on the Paris Agreement.

CWM believes that it is our divine call to stand up against injustice.  Injustice hinders the cause of our God-given rights to live a life that is beneficial to the whole of creation.
