by Cheon Young Cheol

The Council for World Mission (CWM) Board of Directors concludes its annual Council meeting on a high note. This meeting was held from on 15 to 18 June in Montego Bay, Jamaica year’s with the theme: “Dancing in Babylon: a journey of hope.”

The CWM Moderator Samuel Tiaalavea and General Secretary Rev Dr Collin Cowan led the Opening Worship at Falmouth United Church, a member church of the United Church of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands at Trelwany, Jamaica.

The 31 Directors also visited UCJCI partners for field exposure and also attended worship at the local churches on the weekend before the official discussion of business started on Monday, 15 June.

The Council has re-appointed the Rev Dr Cowan’s appointment as CWM General Secretary for a second five year term effective on 1st January 2016.

The re-appointment comes after a one-year period of rigorous review involving all directors, all member churches, all staff and all ecumenical partners with whom he worked closely.

The Council also welcomed representatives from the Maohi Protestant Church (MPC) led by its President Rev Taaroanui Maraea who participated at the meeting as observers.

The Tahiti -based church will be fully incorporated as the 32nd member of CWM at the next year’s General Assembly. This is following the Council’s decision in 2014, wherein it recognises MPC’s historical connection to the work of the London Missionary Society (from which CWM emerged) since 1797.

CWM is a worldwide community of Christian churches. The members are committed to sharing their resources of money, people, skills and insights globally to carry out God’s mission locally.
