#ChooseToChallenge

by Cheon Young Cheol

We salute you on this International Women’s Day (IWD), which is celebrated each year on March 8 since the early 1900s, to shine the spotlight on women and their rights.
The theme of 2021 is Let’s all choose to challenge.

The world has made unprecedented advances, but it remains the sad truth that no country has achieved gender equality. Our societies’ attitudes towards women remain problematic, and often harmful. The theme, Choose to Challenge is a truly powerful one. We, individually, are responsible for our attitudes and actions. Collectively we can change the world.

The IWD website states that:

A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge.  We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.  Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

Most of the positive change we enjoy today came about because someone dared to challenge status quo. Let’s call out injustice and stereotypes wherever we see or hear them, including in our homes, workplaces and churches. We celebrate Council for World Mission, a truly cutting edge mission organisation of our time. However, one of our greatest gifts is fearless introspection and the openness to change. Therefore, as an organisation, we reaffirm our commitment to justice as an employer and a partnership of churches in mission.  We will choose to challenge ourselves and others to do better and lead in doing justice.

We celebrate every woman. We celebrate you.

Happy International Women’s Day!
