Green prayers urged for UK churches on Environment Sunday

Churchgoers in the UK are being urged to join in prayers for the environment this Sunday ahead of UN climate changes talks.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has put out the call to prayer as Christians across the nation gather for Environment Sunday on 7 June.
Dr Williams said it was vital for people of all faiths to take a lead in praying and campaigning for action in the run up to the important UN talks which will take place in Copenhagen in December.
World Environment Day marks the third anniversary of the Church of England’s environmental campaign Shrinking the Footprint.
Churches will gather for a national event at Lambeth Palace on June 11 where new toolkits and other resources will be unveiled to help churches, cathedrals and other buildings reduce their energy footprint.
Shrinking the Footprint chairman, the Bishop of London the Rt Rev Richard Chartres said Environment Sunday provided an opportunity for churches to deepen their own commitment to green issues and to engage with politicians.
"Climate change is a global challenge, the impact of which is being felt first by some of the most vulnerable communities on our planet," he said.
"Loving our neighbour in the 21st Century demands that we should be involved in the effort to mitigate climate change and to help our neighbours to adapt."
