Tsunami students pedal for eco-awareness in Taiwan

A group of Indonesian students studying in Taiwan after the 2004 tsunami has cycled across the country to raise environmental awareness.

Backed by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and other organisations, the students pedalled their way through the 15-day ride as a thank you gesture to Taiwanese society for their stay – and to raise awareness of endangered rainforests in their homeland.

The students were the first group to come over from Indonesia after the Indian Ocean earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck in 2004, and they have been helped by many Christians from Taiwan during their stay.

Most of the group are majoring in environmental science and are due to graduate this month.

Their studies have helped bring environmental awareness to the forefront of church discussions at the Presbyterian Church - and have created greater motivation among church groups to promote a more environmentally-aware lifestyle.
